1925-1990. El Salvadorean politican,
president 1980-82 and 1984-88. He was mayor
of San Salvador 1964-70, and was elected
president 1972, but exiled by the army in
1982. On becoming president again in 1984, he
sought a negotiated settlement with the
left-wing guerrillas 1986, but resigned on
health grounds.
