Market town at the foot of Cader Idris in
Gwynedd, Wales; on the river Wnion;
population (1981) 2,400. The town is also a
tourist centre. Nearby are the Gwynfynydd
(`White mountain') and Clogau goldmines; a
nugget from the latter has supplied gold for
the wedding rings of royal brides since 1923.
