A complex two-stranded molecule that
contains, in chemically coded form, all the
information needed to build, control, and
maintain a living organism. DNA is a
ladderlike double-stranded nucleic acid that
forms the basis of genetic inheritance in all
organisms, except for a few viruses that have
only RNA. In eukaryotic organisms, it is
organized into chromosomes and contained in
the cell nucleus.
