1935- . Senegalese politician, president from
1980. He became prime minister 1970 under
President Leopold Senghor and, on his
retirement, succeeded him, being re-elected
in 1983 and 1988. Born in Louga in NW
Senegal, Diouf studied at Paris University
and was a civil servant before entering
politics. He was chair of the Organization of
African Unity 1985-86.
