1923- . President of Nauru 1968-89, out of 
office 1976-78 and briefly in 1986. During 
the country's occupation 1942-45, he was 
deported to Japan. He became head chief of 
Nauru in 1956 and was elected the country's 
first president in 1968. In 1989 he was 
ousted on a no-confidence motion.
