1904- . German-born US actress and singer,
who first won fame by her appearance with
Emil Jannings in both the German and American
versions of the film The Blue Angel 1930. She
stayed in Hollywood, becoming a US citizen in
1937. Her husky, sultry singing voice added
to her appeal. Her other films include Blonde
Venus 1932 and Destry Rides Again 1939, and
Just a Gigolo 1978. She also starred in
Judgment at Nuremberg 1961 and was the
subject of Maximilian Schell's frank
documentary Marlene 1983.
