British government department created 1964
from a temporary Ministry of Defence
established after World War II together with
the Admiralty, Air Ministry, and War Office.
It is headed by the secretary of state for
defence with undersecretaries for the Royal
Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force. This
centralization was influenced by the example
of the US Department of Defense.
