234-149 BC. Roman politician. Appointed
censor (senior magistrate) in 184, he
excluded from the Senate those who did not
meet his high standards. He was so impressed
by the power of Carthage, on a visit in 157,
that he ended every speech by saying
`Carthage must be destroyed.' His farming
manual is the earliest surviving work in
Latin prose.
