1876-1947. US novelist. Born in Virginia, she
moved to Nebraska as a child. Her novels and
short stories frequently explore life in the
pioneer West, both in her own time and in
past eras; for example, Death Comes for the
Archbishop 1927 is set in New Mexico. Her
other chief works are O Pioneers! 1913, My
Antonia 1918, and A Lost Lady 1923. She also
wrote short stories and essays on fiction.
