1825-1890. Portuguese novelist. His work
fluctuates between mysticism and bohemianism,
and includes Amor de perdicao/Love of
Perdition 1862, written during his
imprisonment for adultery, and Novelas do
Minho 1875, stories of the rural north. Born
illegitimately and then orphaned, he led a
dramatic life. Other works include Onde esta
a felicidade?/Where is Happiness? 1856 and A
brazileira de Prazins/The Brazilian Girl from
Prazins 1882. Made a viscount in 1885, he
committed suicide when overtaken by
blindness.
