1421-1457. Italian Renaissance painter,
active in Florence. In his frescoes in Sta
Apollonia, Florence, he adapted the pictorial
space to the architectural framework and
followed Masaccio's lead in perspective.
Castagno's work is sculptural and strongly
expressive, anticipating the Florentine late
15th-century style, as in his David, about
1450-57 (National Gallery, Washington, DC).
