Chief ore of tin, consisting of reddish-brown
to black stannic oxide (SnO2), usually found
in granite rocks. When fresh it has a bright
(`adamantine') lustre. It was formerly
extensively mined in Cornwall, England; today
Malaysia is the world's major supplier. Other
sources of cassiterite are in Africa,
Indonesia, and South America.
