1908- . US composer. His early music shows the influence of Stravinsky, but after 1950 it became increasingly intricate and densely written in a manner resembling Ives. He invented `metrical modulation' which allows different instruments or groups to stay in touch while playing at different speeds. He has written four string quartets, the Symphony for Three Orchestras 1967, and the song cycle A Mirror on Which to Dwell 1975.
