Inspired by reading Thoreau, he resigned his
post as tutor at Cambridge University 1874 to
write poems and books, such as The
Simplification of Life 1884, Civilization:
Its Cause and Cure 1889, and Love's Coming of
Age 1896, a plea for toleration of
homosexuality.
