1837-1894. French president from 1887,
grandson of Lazare Carnot. He successfully
countered the Boulangist anti-German movement
(see Boulanger) and in 1892 the scandals
arising out of French financial activities in
Panama. He was assassinated by an Italian
anarchist at Lyons.
