1891-1970. German philosopher, in the USA
from 1935, an exponent of logical empiricism.
He was a member of the Vienna Circle, who
adopted Ernst Mach as their guide. His books
include The Logical Syntax of Language 1934
and Meaning and Necessity 1956. He was
professor of philosophy at the University of
California 1954-62.
