1934- . Swedish socialist politician, leader
of the Social Democratic Party, deputy prime
minister 1982-86 and prime minister from
1986. After studying in Sweden and the USA,
Carlsson became president of the Swedish
Social Democratic Youth League in 1961. He
was elected to the Riksdag (parliament) in
1964 and became a minister in 1969. With the
return to power of the Social Democrats in
1982, Carlsson became deputy to Prime
Minister Palme and, on his assassination in
1986, succeeded him.

Carlucci, Frank
1930- . US politician, a pragmatic moderate.
A former diplomat and deputy director of the
CIA, he was national security adviser 1986-87
and defence secretary 1987-89 under Reagan,
supporting Soviet-US arms reduction. Educated
at Princeton and Harvard, Carlucci, after
fighting in the Korean War, was a career
diplomat during the later 1950s and 1960s. He
returned to the USA in 1969 to work under
presidents Nixon, Ford and Carter, his posts
including US ambassador to Portugal and
deputy director of the CIA. An apolitical
Atlanticist, Carlucci found himself out of
step with the hawks in the Reagan
administration, and left to work in industry
after barely a year as deputy secretary of
defence. In Dec 1986, after the Irangate
scandal, he replaced John Poindexter as
national security adviser.
