1545-1568. Spanish prince. Son of Philip II,
he was recognized as heir to the thrones of
Castile and Aragon but became mentally
unstable and had to be placed under restraint
following a plot to assassinate his father.
His story was the subject of plays by
Schiller, Alfieri, Otway, and others.
