1601-1667. Spanish sculptor, painter, and
architect, an exponent of the Baroque style
in Spain. He was active in Seville, Madrid,
and Granada and designed the facade of
Granada Cathedral 1667. From 1637 he was
employed by Philip IV to restore the royal
collection at the Prado Museum in Madrid.
Many of his religious paintings show the
influence of the Venetian masters. He also
created monumental carved screens, such as
the reredos (altar screen) in Lebrija, near
Seville, and graceful free-standing
polychrome carved figures.
