martyr. He took orders as a deacon in the
English church, but fled to Douai, France,
where in 1571 he recanted Protestantism. In
1573 he became a Jesuit in Rome, and in 1580
was sent to England as a missionary. He was
betrayed as a spy in 1581, imprisoned in the
Tower of London, and hanged, drawn, and
quartered as a traitor. Born in London, he
