1836-1908. British Liberal politician, prime
minister 1905-08. It was during his term of
office that the South African colonies
achieved self-government, and the Trades
Disputes Act 1906 was passed.
Campbell-Bannerman, born in Glasgow, was
chief secretary for Ireland 1884-85, war
minister 1886 and again 1892-95, and leader
of the Liberals in the House of Commons from
1899. In 1905 he became prime minister and
led the Liberals to an overwhelming electoral
victory 1906. He began the conflict between
Commons and Lords that led to the Parliament
Act of 1911. He resigned 1908.
