1746-1812. Scottish architect. He trained
under Isaac Ware in the Palladian tradition
before being summoned to Russia in 1779. He
created the palace complex at Tsarskoe Selo
(now Pushkin), planned the town of Sofia, and
from 1803, as Chief Architect of the
Admiralty, executed many buildings, including
the Naval Hospital and barracks at Kronstadt
1805.
