1899-1986. US actor who moved to films from
Broadway. Usually associated with gangster
roles in films such as The Public Enemy 1931,
he was an actor of great versatility, playing
Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream 1935 and
singing and dancing in Yankee Doodle Dandy
1942.
