1885-1962. British admiral in World War II.
He was commander in chief in the
Mediterranean 1943-46, First Sea Lord
1946-48, and became admiral of the fleet in
1948. In 1940 he assisted in the evacuation
of Norway and as Fourth Sea Lord in charge of
supplies and transport 1941-43, prepared the
way for the N African invasion in 1942.
