A prehistoric human, believed to be ancestral to Europeans, the first skeletons of which were found 1868 in the Cro-Magnon cave near Les Eyzies, in the Dordogne region of France. They are thought to have superseded the Neanderthals about 40,000 years ago. Although biologically advanced, they were more robust in build than present-day humans. They hunted bison, reindeer, and horses, and are associated with two successive Upper Paleolithic cultures (Aurignacian and Magdalenian), which produced fine flint and bone tools, jewellery, and naturalistic cave paintings.
