1845-1915. British artist, designer, and book
illustrator. He was influenced by William
Morris and became an active socialist in the
1880s. While apprenticed to W J Linton, a
wood engraver, he came under the influence of
the Pre-Raphaelites. His book illustration,
both for children's and for adult books,
included an edition of Spenser's Faerie
Queene 1894-96.
