1731-1800. English poet. He trained as a
lawyer, but suffered a mental breakdown 1763
and entered an asylum, where he underwent an
evangelical conversion. He later wrote hymns
(including `God moves in a mysterious way').
His verse includes the six books of The Task
1785.
