1494-1534. Italian painter of the High
Renaissance, whose style followed the
classical grandeur of Leonardo and Titian but
anticipated the Baroque in its emphasis on
movement, softer forms, and contrasts of
light and shade. Based in Parma, he painted
splendid illusionistic visions in the
cathedral there.
His religious paintings, including the night
scene Adoration of the Shepherds about
1527-30 (Gemaldegalerie, Dresden), and
mythological scenes, such as The Loves of
Jupiter (Wallace Collection, London), were
much admired in the 18th century.
