1796-1875. French painter, creator of a
distinctive landscape style with cool colours
and soft focus. His early work, including
Italian scenes in the 1820s, influenced the
Barbizon school of painters. Like them, Corot
worked outdoors, but he also continued a
conventional academic tradition with more
romanticized paintings.
