1715-1780. French philosopher. He mainly
followed Locke, but his Traite de sensations
1754 claims that all mental activity stems
from the
transformation of sensations. He was a
collaborator in the French Encyclopedie. Born
in Grenoble of noble parentage, he entered
the church and was appointed tutor to Louis
XV's grandson, the duke of Parma.
