1892-1962. US physicist known for his work on X-rays. Working at Chicago 1923 he found that X-rays scattered by such light elements as carbon increased their wavelengths. Compton concluded from this unexpected result that the X-rays were displaying both wave-like and particle-like properties, since named the Compton effect. He shared the 1927 Nobel prize with Charles Wilson.
