1956- . English middle-distance runner. He
was Olympic 1,500-metre champion 1980 and
1984. Between 1979 and 1981 he broke eight
individual world records at 800 metres, 1,000
metres, 1,500 metres, and one mile. In 1990
he announced his retirement after failing to
win a Commonwealth Games title and is now
pursuing a political career with the
