1862-1913. US aviation pioneer. He made his
first powered flight on 16 Oct 1908 at
Farnborough, England, in a machine of his own
design. He was killed in a flying accident.
Born in Texas, USA, he took British
nationality in 1909. He spent his early days
with a cowboy stage and circus act, and made
kites capable of lifting people.
