Region of SE Asia. With Cambodia it formed
part of the ancient Khmer empire. In the
17th-18th centuries it was conquered by
Annam. Together with Cambodia it became,
1863-67, the first part of the Indochinese
peninsula to be occupied by France. Since
1949 it has been part of Vietnam.
