1939- . Canadian Progressive Conservative
politician, born in Alberta. He became party
leader 1976, and in May 1979 defeated Trudeau
at the polls to become the youngest prime
minister in Canada's history. Following the
rejection of his government's budget, he was
defeated in a second election Feb 1980. He
became Secretary of State for External
Affairs (foreign minister) in the Mulroney
government (1984- ).
