Clapperton, Hugh 1788-1827. English explorer
who crossed the Sahara from Tripli with Dixon
Denham and discovered Lake Chad 1823. With
his servant, Richard Lander, he attempted to
reach the Niger, but died at Sokoto. Lander
eventually reached the mouth of the river
Niger in 1830.
