Sect of Indian Christians on the Malabar
Coast, named after the apostle who is
supposed to have carried his mission to
India. In fact the Christians of St Thomas
were established in the 5th century by
Nestorians from Persia. They now form part of
the Assyrian Church (see under Nestorianism)
and have their own patriarch.
