1935- . English footballer, older brother of Robert (Bobby) and nephew of Jackie Milburn. He spent all his playing career with Leeds United and played more than 750 games for them. He and his brother both appeared in the England team that won the World Cup 1966. After retiring, Charlton managed Middlesborough to the 2nd division title. Appointed manager of the Republic of Ireland national squad in 1986, he took the team to the 1988 European Championship finals after which he was made an `Honorary Irishman'. He led Ireland to the World Cup finals for the first time in 1990.
