1825-1893. French neurologist who studied
hysteria, sclerosis, locomotor ataxia, and
senile diseases. Among his pupils was Sigmund
Freud. Charcot worked at a hospital in Paris,
where he studied the way certain mental
illnesses cause physical changes in the
brain. He exhibited hysterical women at
weekly public lectures, which became highly
fashionable events.
