1907-1971. British explorer, mountaineer, and
writer, who explored Greenland, the
Himalayas, and Malaysia. He accompanied Gino
Watkins on the British Arctic Air Routes
Expedition 1930-31, recalled in Northern
Lights 1932, and in 1935 he joined a climbing
expedition to the Himalayas. For two years he
participated in a government mission to Tibet
described in Lhasa, the Holy City 1938,
before setting out to climb the 7,315
m/24,000 ft peak, Chomollari.
