1883-1930. US star of silent films, often in
grotesque or monstrous roles such as The
Phantom of the Opera 1925. A master of
make-up, he was nicknamed `The Man of a
Thousand Face'. He sometimes employed
extremely painful devices for added
effectiveness, as in the title role in The
Hunchback of Notre Dame 1923, when he carried
over 70 lbs of costume in the form of a heavy
hump and harness.
