1567-1635. French pioneer, soldier, and
explorer in Canada. Having served in the army
of Henry IV and on an expedition to the West
Indies, he began his exploration of Canada
1603. In a third expedition 1608 he founded
and named Quebec, and was appointed
Lieutenant-Governor of French Canada 1612.
