1920- . US physicist whose graduate studies
were interrupted by wartime work on the
Manhattan project at Los Alamos. After World
War II, working with Italian physicist Emilio
Segre, he discovered the existence of the
antiproton. Both men were awarded the Nobel
Prize for Physics in 1959.
