1906-1979. German-born British biochemist who
worked on the development of penicillin.
Chain fled to Britain from the Nazis 1933.
After the discovery of penicillin by
Alexander Fleming, Chain worked to isolate
and purify it. For this work, he shared the
1945 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Fleming
and Howard Florey. Chain also discovered
penicillinase, an enzyme that destroys
penicillin.
