1891-1974. British physicist. In 1932 he
discovered the particle in the nucleus of an
atom that became known as the neutron because
it has no electric charge. He was awarded a
Nobel prize 1935. Chadwick studied at
Cambridge under Ernest Rutherford. He was
Lyon Jones professor of physics at Liverpool
1935-48, and master of Gonville and Caius
College, Cambridge 1948-59. In 1940 he was
one of the British scientists reporting on
the atom bomb.
