president from 1979. An army colonel, he
supported Boumedienne in the overthrow of Ben
Bella 1965, and succeeded Boumedienne 1979,
pursuing more moderate policies. He prevailed
in a power struggle Sept 1989 with Prime
Minister Kasdi Merbah, replacing him with
Mouloud Hamrouche.
