1930- . French film director. Originally a
critic, he was one of the French `New Wave'
of directors. His works of murder and
suspense, which owe much to Hitchcock,
include Les Biches/The Girlfriends 1968, Le
Boucher/The Butcher 1970, and Cop au Vin
1984.
