1829-1884. King of Zululand, S Africa
1873-83, whose rule was threatened by British
annexation of the Transvaal 1877. Although he
defeated the British at Isandhlwana 1879, he
was later that year defeated by them at
Ulundi. Restored to his throne 1883, he was
then expelled by his subjects.
