1905-1976. British painter devoted to themes
of city life, its hustle, humour, and grimy
squalor. The Snack Bar 1930 (Tate Gallery,
London) and his watercolour scenes of Harlem,
New York, 1933-34, are characteristic.
Postwar works include religious paintings and
landscapes.
