1923-1985. Guyanese Marxist-Leninist
politician. He was prime minister 1964-80,
leading the country to independence 1966 and
declaring it the world's first cooperative
republic 1970. He was executive president
1980-85. Resistance to the US landing in
Grenada 1983 was said to be due to his
forewarning the Grenadans of the attack.
